At $8.33 per 100 mL, it costs less per mL than Essentially Based, Beach Labs, Ancient Minerals and Naka in our table. Best budget per mL: Life-flo Pure Magnesium Oil
Life-flo is the cheapest per mL in our table: CA$16.83 for 237 mL on iHerb Canada, or $7.10 per 100 mL. It is magnesium chloride brine from the Zechstein seabed in the Netherlands, with 52,068 reviews at 4.5 stars on iHerb.
Two things to know. iHerb's free shipping starts at CA$55, so a single bottle on its own does not qualify. And Healthy Planet lists it at $14.99, but it shows as out of stock. If you are already building an iHerb cart, Life-flo is a smart buy.

Best made in Canada: Beach Labs
Beach Labs makes its spray in Canada from Pacific Ocean water off the coast of British Columbia. The ingredient list reads filtered, boiled and concentrated ocean water, and the brand says it holds over 40 trace minerals. It suggests 5 to 10 sprays per use.
The 237 mL bottle is $24.95 on Amazon.ca, or $10.53 per 100 mL. Buy it if a B.C. ocean source matters most to you.
Best-known Zechstein name: Ancient Minerals
Ancient Minerals calls its Zechstein spray the original magnesium oil, trusted since 2007. The 8 oz (237 mL) bottle lists water, Zechstein magnesium chloride and natural trace minerals, and the brand says six sprays deliver 100 mg of magnesium chloride.

What to look for when buying
- A short ingredient list. Magnesium chloride and water, maybe trace minerals. Scented sprays can add glycerin, preservatives and essential oils.
- A named source. Dead Sea, Zechstein, ocean water or Great Salt Lake. One spray in our table does not say where its magnesium chloride comes from.
- Price per 100 mL. Bottles run from 120 mL to 240 mL, so compare per mL, not per bottle.
- Sprays per use. Labels range from 4 to 10 sprays a session, which changes how long a bottle lasts.
- A plan for sensitive skin. Look for a brand that tells you how to dilute. Plant of Life says 50:50 with water.

FAQ
Is magnesium oil actually an oil?
No. Magnesium oil is a concentrated solution of magnesium chloride in water. It gets the name because it feels slick, almost oily, on your skin. Plant of Life lists magnesium chloride USP, the minimum purified water needed to keep it liquid, and natural traces of Dead Sea minerals. Nothing oily is added.
Why does magnesium oil tingle or itch?
A tingling or itchy feeling is common, especially the first few times. Plant of Life suggests making sure your skin is well hydrated before you spray. If the itch hangs on, rinse the oil off after 20 minutes. For sensitive skin, mix it 50:50 with water before use.
Is Zechstein or Dead Sea magnesium better?
Both are natural sources of magnesium chloride. Zechstein comes from an ancient seabed under the Netherlands, and Life-flo says it is extracted from 1,600 to 2,000 metres down. Plant of Life uses Dead Sea magnesium chloride. Other brands use ocean water or the Great Salt Lake. A named source plus a short ingredient list matters more than the location.
Where should I spray magnesium oil?
Plant of Life suggests 4 to 5 sprays on the feet, legs or any area you choose, massaged in until absorbed. Let it air dry. You may see a few white magnesium crystals on your skin, which is normal. People use it during the day as needed, or at night before sleep.
What do people use magnesium oil spray for?
Most people reach for it after workouts, for tight or crampy muscles, and as part of a relaxing bedtime routine. A spray goes right where you want it, and you can use it any time of day. Plant of Life designed its spray for post-workout recovery, muscle tension and nighttime relaxation.
